As a webmaster you will eventually build your own little toolkit of useful programs and utilities for making and administrating your website..

There are many useful programs that can be tried out for free. Below I have provided links and descriptions to programs which are shareware or freeware that will aid you in the creation, management and promotion of your website.

3D Impact Pro - Create high quality 3D graphics (11.5 MB).

Aadvark Pro- A popular HTML editor with many advanced features. Helpful wizards automate many tasks.

AscToHTM - The best Text to HTML converter currently available. Great for posting your newsletter archives online.

AgentWebRanking - This freeware program will submit your site to 650 directories, search engines and FFA pages. It will also help you monitor your rankings in 13 search engines and improve them and much more. NOT RECOMMENDED.

AolPress - A freeware WYSIWYG webpage creation software, not something that you would expect from AOL..

CGI StarPro - Makes the creation of CGI scripts easy (1.2MB).

Cyberspyder - Download this program to check links on your site.

Debabelizer Pro - Download the demo of this awesome program to help you in reducing the size of your images, a Mac version is also available (3.3MB).

Eudora - Once you subscribe to several mailing lists, and run a website it's very important to manage your e-mail properly. So grab a copy of the free Eudora Light, or try out Eudora Pro for 30 days.

GIF Animator Lite - You can grab a free copy of Ulead GIF Animator Lite Edition from this site. Look under the Free Stuff section to find a link to the download.

GIF Construction Set - An easy to use GIF animation program. It has several neat features such as the ability to create spinning logos. It even includes wizards, and "supercompression" which works well on reducing the size of your images.

GIF Movie Gear - Currently the best animation tool available, easy to use and loaded with features like a preview window, cropping, generation of HTML, importing Photoshop files, and image optimization and more. Highly recommended.

GIMP - This is the Photoshop of Linux, and is currently being ported to work in Windows 95. Best part, it's FREE! Recommended.

HotDog Webmaster Suite - A very powerful HTML Editor, instant DHTML generator, site analysis and reporting, and an image editor all in one powerful package. Full Review Highly Recommended.

Homesite - One of the best HTML programs for those you have a strong familiarity with HTML but don't want to use a text editor.

ImageDicer - A great little (half a megabyte) freeware utility that will split up any image into many smaller ones and automatically generate the HTML code to make sure the separate images assemble together properly. Highly Recommended.

Ixsite Web Analyzer - Checks for broken links, maps your site showing the relationship between pages and the distance from one page to another and much more! A great tool for testing the navigation system/structure of your site. (Commercial Demoware)

Java Tools - A huge list of Java tools of interest to webmasters.

JPEG Optimizer - A hand JPEG compression tool with realtime preview, and batch mode.

Lview Pro - A good, basic program for creating graphics for the internet with lots of useful features (1.3MB).

Linkbot - A great link validation utility which generates very detailed and informative reports about the status of your site. A freeware version is available in addition to a 15 Day trial of the Pro version.

Macromedia Dreamweaver - One of the two best WYSIWIG HTML Editors on the market today, a 30 day trial version is available for download. Recommended.

Paint Shop Pro - One of the best painting/drawing shareware programs available, extremely popular and it supports Photoshop filters (3MB). Highly Recommended.

Reptile - If you want to make backgrounds you have to try out this program. It's easy to use, loaded with features, very addictive and best of all absolutely FREE. Highly Recommended.

SiteBoss - A great program for managing your entire site. It checks links, spelling, HTML Syntax, and allows you to make changes to every page on your site at the same time. Recommended.

SitePromoter - Generate traffic to your website with SitePromoter software.

TextPad - A great Text Editor with many formatting options. Use it to write your newsletter, or code your website by hand. Highly Recommended.

Tucows Website Promo - A list of website promotion programs, with a short description and rating from Tucows.

TypeItIn - This utility will allow you to store multiple pieces of text on the clipboard and selectively paste them into forms in your browser (or anywhere else for that matter). A great time saver when submitting your site to directories & search engines.

UltraEdit - A great text editor that can also be used for coding HTML by hand thanks to automatic coloring of HTML tags, Column/block mode editing, advanced formatting features and more. Recommended.

WebExpress - A basic WYSIWYG shareware webpage creation program package (3MB).

WebPosition - Want to increase your Web Site Traffic? WebPosition makes it easy to monitor your search positions & to improve your rankings! Don't be buried in last place, move up to first place! Highly Recommended.

Webtrends - Download a 14 day trial of this log analyzer program, for those who have access to log files from their webhosting company.

WebTV Simulator - A freeware software package that will show you how your site looks for those using WebTV.

WebsitePromotion Tools - A large list of programs of interest to webmasters to help in website promotion.

WindowWatch - This great freeware utility will allow you to test your site in a variety of resolutions very quickly. Recommended.

Xara 3D 2 - Create stunning 3D still and animated logos perfect for use on the web. You can easily and quickly alter the extrude depth, lighting and bevel type, the font, the foreground and background color or texture. The program supports multiple file formats. Full Review. Highly Recommended.

Xara Webster - Create, compose and optimize vector and bitmap graphics for the web, including animated GIFs.
